Natural Wood & Veneers / Calgary

Natural character. Appropriate construction.

Real wood varies in grain and colour. The species, cut, board or veneer selection, substrate and finish all contribute to the appearance. We review them in relation to the component, the room and the project budget.

01 / Natural Wood & Veneers

Real wood veneer

Veneer is a thin layer of natural wood applied to an appropriate substrate. It offers genuine grain and colour with construction characteristics suited to many broad panels. Matching, grain direction and edge details remain important.

  • Selected substrates and veneer faces
  • Grain layout across related panels
  • Natural colour and pattern variation
  • Suitable edge treatment and finishing

Solid wood

Solid wood can be useful for appropriate doors, trims, shelving and specialty components. It responds to changes in moisture and environment, so movement must be allowed for in the design and construction.

  • Suitable component sizes and joinery
  • Natural movement and room conditions
  • Finishing and maintenance
  • Selective use with other materials
03 / Natural Wood & Veneers

White oak and maple

White oak has a distinctive, generally open grain with natural variation. Maple typically has a finer, less prominent grain and can suit a lighter, more restrained appearance. Actual samples matter more than a screen image.

  • White oak for visible grain and texture
  • Maple for a generally finer grain direction
  • Cut, selection and finish influence appearance
  • Availability and pricing confirmed for the project
04 / Natural Wood & Veneers

Cherry and walnut

Cherry offers fine grain and warm character and changes colour with age and light exposure. Walnut is known for darker tones and distinctive grain. Both require appropriate selection, finishing and a realistic expectation of natural variation.

  • Cherry colour development over time
  • Walnut’s darker natural palette
  • Solid and veneer applications
  • Samples reviewed with adjacent materials

Veneer or solid wood?

The right construction depends on the part. A veneered large panel may be appropriate where a broad solid-wood component would need different movement allowances. Neither is automatically superior in every application.

  • Component size and stability
  • Desired grain continuity
  • Edge and joinery details
  • Maintenance and budget priorities

Useful answers

Before we begin.

Is veneer real wood?

Yes. Natural veneer is real wood applied as a thin layer to a suitable substrate. It differs from a printed wood-look decorative panel.

Can you make the grain run continuously?

Grain layout and matching can be specified where feasible, depending on the material selection, panel sizes and available veneer.

Is maple less grainy than white oak?

Maple typically has a finer, less prominent grain, but samples of the actual product and finish should guide the decision.

Will wood change colour?

Natural wood can change with age and light. Cherry is particularly known for colour development; finishes also influence the appearance.
